(3575) Canal spillways
A by-pass structure, usually designed to operate automatically, to discharge surplus and waste water into a waste channel above a set elevation and, in some types, also to wash out ice, weeds and other floating materials. If a spillway is used as protection for a power plant or similar installation, it may be required to pass the entire flow. Functionally, a spillway differs from a wasteway in that, while the former may possibly discharge the entire flow, it cannot be used to empty a canal.
